How to do MonochromeApril 14th, 2014

clean. simpleI visited with a client this morning and felt a surge of pride when she showed up in a perfectly fabulous monochrome outfit.  She masterfully mixed and matched shades of beige which highlighted her autumn coloring.  Not everyone is comfortable creating this chic head to toe look, so here are a few pointers to get you started.

First, have fun with it and choose a favorite bold hue.  There are such an array of great spring colors out there at the moment!   Then, make it interesting by mixing fabrics and textures.

Neutrals are always a good choice since they are easy to do head to toe.  A great spring look would be mixing a crisp white with an ivory.  Just make sure the color that suits you best (one of your colors) is the one near your face.

Finally, make the outfit pop by strategically adding one accessory in a complimentary color to your monochrome outfit.  You will be enviably chic!

You Get What You Pay ForMarch 25th, 2014

We’ve all heard the saying “You get what you pay for” and we believe that definitely applies to your clothing.  Make no assumptions; there are exceptions to the rule, but more times than not this saying is true.  Have you ever really thought about the quality vs. quantity of your clothing?  Many of you hcolorsaven’t and it’s time to take notice.

This isn’t to say that you should spend outside your budget for clothing, but you should always buy the best quality you can afford.  Take note of quality details when shopping for clothing.  Look at the construction of the garment; are seams sewn securely and hems stitched tight?  There is nothing worse than stepping on a hem that has come undone while you’re wearing the pants.  Or pulling the stray thread on a top and the seam comes apart.  Both have happened to us which makes us more aware of what to look for. Other general construction items to pay attention to are:

  • buttons- make sure they are secure
  • seaming-make sure seams lay flat especially on blazers, jackets and fitted button down
  • blouses, lining-most blazers should be lined

Another major item to pay attention to is fabric and fabric care.  Will you really dry-clean that garment if you purchase it?  If not, don’t buy it, it’s that simple!  You need to care for the garment like the care label reads.  This is especially important with a few materials (modal comes to mind) if it is not washed correctly it will look worn-out after one washing.  Notice the fabric type, if the sweater sheds all over you in the dressing room it will do the same in your closet, car, etc.  Use fabric type and content to determine shrinkage and stretching too.

Spring Mix and Match – White Pumps!March 18th, 2014

White PumpsClassic black pumps are being challenged with the clean and minimalist presence of white pumps. Besides being a simple neutral hue, white pumps give a little more contrast in color and character without an over-the- top design.  White pumps also provide the edgy look you need for a notice-me outfit.  Check out how the street fashionistas out there combine them according to their personal style.

A fabulous idea is pairing a matching suit with a pair of white pumps. This will give the impression of fun and chic, going beyond the look of boring office wear.  Want to look casual and chic? Throw on a pair of bright colored pants, a simple white t-shirt, and white pumps. Too cute! Want to play with the prints? Mix tropical prints with muted colors to help you celebrate spring and welcome summer. Then add white pumps to take your appearance to another level.

White pumps tend to have simple and clean designs, which makes these shoes easy to mix and match with different outfits, so have fun with it!

Easy steps to Create Wardrobe CapsulesFebruary 26th, 2014

Displaying wardrobe.jpg

Have you heard the term wardrobe capsules? It is a collection of essential items of clothing that will not go out of style (i.e. skirts, trousers, and coats, etc.) which can then be updated with seasonal pieces and categorized for your lifestyle needs.  The different capsules in your wardrobe will reflect who you are and how you spend your time.

Building your capsules begins with a few key steps. First you need to begin with the foundation of your wardrobe.  These are the building blocks that your capsules are based on:

1.  Your colors

2.  Your particular style

3.  Your body type

If you do not feel secure in knowing what colors suit you, how to dress your body and what styles work for you, use us as a resource.  That is what we do, so contact us and we can help.

So now that you know your basics, the next step is to take a look at your wardrobe and eliminate the items that do not work for you. If you are left only with a few items, that is okay! The bright side is you can go shopping for items that you really need in order to build your wardrobe.  And yes, we can help you with this as well!

A couple things we stress when shopping.

1. You must LOVE the item before purchasing.  Otherwise it may become one of those items hanging in your closet never to be worn with the tags still on.  Never a good use of money!

2. Always choose QUALITY over quantity.  It really does bring your cost per wear down when you have items that you can wear many times over, plus you need to see what you have in your closet!

Stay fabulous!

Must Have Winter Staple: CashmereJanuary 25th, 2014

cashmereAs the winter is getting colder and colder, dressing the part is definitely a no joke. Forget baggy sweatshirts or bulky sweaters; don’t let the bitter cold winter stop you from looking chic!  Consider a cashmere sweater; a remarkable piece that surely won’t score you the ugly sweater award at the holiday party.

A cashmere sweater is typically lightweight, very soft, thinner than most cotton or wool sweaters, yet extra warm. The price is definitely much more expensive than any other sweater because it is made from a fiber collected from the cashmere goat after winter. Cashmere goats naturally grow a layer of very fine hairs to withstand very low temperatures, so it is very warm.  Plus, it is a great investment piece that will last for years as long as you take care of it properly.

Nowadays, you can find cashmere beanies, gloves, scarves, and socks that will keep you toasty warm from head to toe.

Stay warm and stylish!
